What it does...
Digital Light Processing is a microtechnology invented by Texas Instruments invented technology that uses mirrors to create images. By rapidly toggling these mirrors, light is reflected
through a lens to create images of varying quality. The quality of the image is determined by the number of mirrors used. DLP technology is used by projecting light into this
specialized integrated circuit. The requires all DLP TVs to be rear-projection. The technology has also become a standard in high-definiton projectors and is often used in movie theatres.
Because of its extremely rapid image generation, DLP boasts no ghosting or blurring of any kind, making it ideal for rapid changing images, such as sports programs. DLP manufacturers
also claim their technology provides HD viewing at a much cheaper price than that of LCDs and Plasmas. Since DLP sets are generally offerred in larger sizes, this has not directly influenced
DLP TV sales.
What they don't do...
If you are looking for perfection in your viewing experience, DLP might disappoint. DLP TVs are known to have developed a number of "effects" involving "silk-screens" and "screen doors." Several viewing issues involving the screen have been discovered, making
the experience of viewing TV through textured plastic less than enjoyable. The light-bulb used to project the image inside the TV will burnout eventually. Also, it takes time to warm up and cool down,
adding time to powering on and off the TV. As far as viewing-angle goes, you are looking at a projection, designed to be viewed straight-on. Straying took far in any direction (including up or down) creates
a slight reflection, distorting images.
